Atto Tetteh Goes “Back to Basics” With Its SS22 Collection

For the spring/summer 2022 collection by luxury Ghanaian brand Atto Tetteh, founder and designer George Tetteh stayed close to home for inspiration, which came in the form of Fort William in Anomabo, Ghana. Sitting along Ghana’s Gold Coast, the colonial-era structure was built in 1783 and became a prominent location during the British slave trade. Earlier this year, Tetteh told The Folklore that the most memorable place he’s been is Fort William because he has known of it for all his life, but had never thought of visiting until recently. With the mantra “better late than never”, the collection sees the designer explore his hometown landmark with a combined sense of curiosity, nostalgia and pride.

Titled “Back To Basics”, Atto Tetteh’s SS22 collection aims to redefine the fundamentals of the modern wardrobe, with classic fashion themes of monochromatic designs, bold patterns and pinstripe tailoring. However, the designs are punctuated with a distinct African sensibility, rendered through traditional-inspired prints, colorful tie-dye and voluminous silhouettes.

Designed to be worn for daily pursuits, the pieces in the “Back To Basics” collection are easy to wear and move in, evidenced by the accompanying short film “The Fort”, showing the clothes in motion around the city; pinstriped pants with a matching vest over a T-shirt on a skateboard rider, palazzo pants, tailored shirts and oversized shirts for a rooftop picnic. An illustration of Fort William, created by graphic and textile designer Metakay is a recurring print used across shirting and dresses. Techniques and fabrications including cotton and tulle, hand-crocheting and tie-dye are employed in a skilful manner, proving that there is nothing basic about the “Back To Basics” collection.
