Just in time for New York Fashion Week, South African jewelry brand, Pichulik has partnered with Nigerian fashion darling, Orange Culture to create a luxury jewelry collab. Loud and heavy on the symbolism, the collection promises to delight wearers and engage them in a larger conversation about empowerment and identity.
If you don't know Adebayo Oke-Lawal’s Orange Culture by now, you haven't been paying attention. Founded in 2011, shortly after the designer's graduation from the University of Lagos, the ready to wear brand has racked up accolades and won the hearts of fashion insiders around the globe in the years since. In 2015, the label was selected as a finalist by Louis Vuitton and Moet Hennessey for the first-ever LVMH prize.
Past collaborators include Huawei, Dennis Osadebe, Rokus London, Maxivive as well as a partnership with Afrobeats artist Davido for Selfridges.
Pichulik's story begins in South Africa where founder Katherine-Mary Pichulik makes elaborate and ostentatious jewelry out of her small studio. To date, her pieces are sold in 14 countries and have appeared in Vogue, who named the label on the top ten African fashion brands to watch.
Pichulik the label consists of necklaces, bracelets, earrings and other accessories constructed from a mix of high and low materials: Sailors rope, Agate from Mali, Toureg talismans, Turkish totems and more. The cross-national materials are sourced from Pichulik’s network of local traders and artisans across Ghana, Niger, Morocco and beyond.
Pichulik’s sensibilities come from her childhood in the ‘80s. Her fashionable mother would lend her broken jewelry play with while an ex-boyfriend's dad who worked in the sailing industry encouraged her to experiment with rope. At the root of the brand is a desire to empower women and to reframe materials one thought restrictive or low-class into symbols of independence.
Together, the two brands have created a limited-edition collection that includes adjustable necklaces that utilize Pichulik's signature braided design, two brass caps that appear on both ends of the open-cuff, and mini gold-plated brass studs; a Silicon Carbide Pendant and; more. The collection features more subtle black items and extends to purple and blue statement pieces with bold accents.
