Take Your First Look at Orange Culture’s Fall/Winter 2021 Collection
The relationship between fathers and sons is one of the most prevalent in the history of mankind. From Zeus and Apollo of Greek mythology to Abraham and Isaac in the Bible, history has shown us that a man’s life trajectory is often set in motion and vastly influenced by his father’s way of life.
This delicate relationship is the inspiration for Orange Culture’s recently unveiled lookbook for its fall/winter 2021 collection. “Honest” is dedicated to fathers such as creative director Adebayo Oke-Lawal’s, who he celebrates for accepting their sons exactly the way they are. “It is about fathers who love football and have sons who instead want to watch fashion shows or plant flowers, and rather than that bridging a gap, these men find a way to cement differences not only through acceptance but support as well. My father and I were very different when I was growing up, he didn’t really understand why I just wanted or liked the things that I liked,” says Oke-Lawal. “But as we grew older, his acceptance and acknowledgement of our differences is one of the most special feelings, and I feel a certain sense of confidence wearing my father’s clothes.”
The conception of the “Honest” collection began with a mood board that Oke-Lawal filled with pictures of his father in his youth; his college graduation, at work; images that immediately give away the decade they were captured in as the 1970s, thanks to the fired trousers, wide collars and floral-print shirts. It is this same decade that Oke-Lawal draws from in his latest designs, essentially a reworking of his father’s wardrobe for today’s modern man. From corduroy fabrics mixed with Nigerian aso-oke, to frills and chiffons, the collection is an exploration of textures that range from tough to delicate.
Orange Culture considers itself more than a clothing brand; instead, it’s a string of social awareness and expressions cut into clothing. It translates emotions into African-inspired prints rendered in contemporary, androgynous silhouettes. “For me, fashion continues to be an important way to investigate social dynamics,” shares the creative director. “I wanted this collection to truly underscore the rare but necessary condition of father-son relationship – particularly on this side of the world.”
