Sounds of the Month July ’21: What We’re Listening To Now

Wondering what The Folklore team is listening to this month? We’ve put together a playlist of the tracks we have on rotation at the moment. Taking inspiration from our recent ‘My Folklore’ subject, the Nigerian-American dancer and choreographer Izzy Odigie, we’ve added GoodGirl LA to our tracklist, after Odigie shared with us the top five songs she’s listening to. The Nigerian singer-songwriter made her debut in 2015 but it was her breakout song “Faraway” that put her on the map back in 2018. Exemplary of the many ways modern Afropop keeps evolving, her song “Bando” is a bop we’ll be listening (and dancing) to for a while.

Another tune Odigie shared with us is the latest from Snoh Aalegra. “Dying 4 Y Love” is a contemporary R&B song with an old-school vibe. One of the lead singles from her newly released third album Temporary Highs In The Violet Skies, Aalegra’s sultry voice effortlessly hovers over smooth beats as she sings of love and romantic woes.

Elsewhere on our 20-song collection is American singer and producer Cautious Clay’s “Whoa”, from his debut full-length album Deadpan Love, and “Beretta” by The Folklore favorite Mereba.
