Sounds of the Month September ’21: The Folklore CEO Amira Rasool’s Travel Playlist

As the Founder and CEO of The Folklore, Amira Rasool is always on the go, overseeing editorial photo shoots and visiting the designers that we stock in their ateliers. It also happens that she is an avid traveler who enjoys visiting new places and never stays in the same place for too long. She even has her own Instagram hashtag that chronicles her many travels around the globe, #AmiraStayTrippin. Each year, towards the end of the summer, she takes an extended break for a trip to a new part of the world, and after more than a year without international travel, she was more than ready get back on the road visit Portugal in southern Europe and the North African country of Morocco.

As Rasool found, a passport is not the only gateway to a new destination. Every place has its own sound, whether it’s the cacophony of daily life or the dulcet tones of local music that you can only discover when you’re on the ground.

This month, Rasool shares the songs that she could not escape and which became the soundtrack to her travels as she explored the streets of Lisbon and the Algarve in Portugal, and Marrakech and Essaouira in Morocco.

Her playlist, which you can listen to below, is a curation of contemporary songs and old-school classics from across the diaspora, with tracks that range from reggae and Afrobeats to hip-hop, disco and R&B from the likes of Lianne La Havas, Lucky Daye, Rema and Peter Tosh.
