3 Ways to Style Three Looks for Three Occasions With Writer and DJ Akili King

If there was one major universal feeling coming out of lockdown for summer 2021, it was the joys of the return of fashion. From days spent with friends to nights spent dancing and partying, having a fun outfit to express our excitement for our newfound freedom is of paramount importance. Vibrant colors, geometric shapes, and exuberant patterns have all made their way back to the forefront of fashion and into our latest iteration of The Folklore’s 3 Ways to Style lookbook.

Wearing pieces from African designer brands including OnalajaGozel Green and Mazelle Studio, writer and DJ Akili King takes us through three looks for three summer occasions, with each outfit coming together to exude the lively spirit of the season. The curator of the Vogue series on Black hair, Textured Diaries, describes her personal style as bohemian chic and loves to mix earthy tones with patterns, while striving to support Black designers and brands.

For this edition of 3 Ways To Style, we asked writer and DJ Akili King to choose her favorite pieces from the collections on The Folklore and style three looks for three occasions, while she reveals the places, plans and people she will be dressing up for.

Look 1: Brunch date

If you love a good brunch outing you can’t go wrong with a stylish midi skirt. This black Puzzle Skirt by Gozel Green adds an unexpected element to the everyday staple with contrast trimming, geometric shaping, and a layered design. Paired with Mazelle Studio’s Sequin Gathered Sleeve V-neck Blouse this outfit is just the right amount of flare and fun for any brunch date. The block heel is perfect for this occasion and makes for a great casual-chic finish to the ensemble, perfect for a post-brunch stroll. The mixing of earthy colors in this outfit plays well into this elevated casual look and just goes to show that neutral doesn’t have to mean boring.

Look 2: Summer cookout

It wouldn’t be a summer BBQ without good food and good music so it’s important to have an outfit that is comfortable yet stylish to fit the occasion. The standout piece for this ensemble is the Gozel Green Basket Skirt in white. The woven detailing adds an eye-catching and artistic touch while the thick tassels that flow from the front make this the perfect skirt for dancing. Worn with the print short-sleeve button-up shirt from Mazelle Studio, this outfit comes together with ease to create a flattering silhouette and comfortable fit. Akili instantly elevated with her addition of gold jewelry such as the Marcy cuff bracelet by Thid Crown and Garland Hoop Earrings from South African brand Pichulik, which ties the look together with pops of blue to match the top. The comfort, style and ease of this look will make you this summer cookout’s standout guest.

Look 3: A DJ set

If there’s anything that a great party needs it’s a great DJ and if there’s one thing any great DJ needs it’s a great outfit for the function and Akili has both covered. This Nawi Mesh Bodycon Leopard Print Dress by Onalaja is the perfect dress for an outdoor summer DJ set. It’s fun and funky yet sexy and cool. The mesh material makes for a breathable and moveable garment, which is great for dancing the day or night away, while the vibrant printed pattern will ensure you don’t get lost in the crowd. For a finishing touch, Akili has chosen the Snake Chain Cuff Stud earrings from Cape Town jewelry brand LORNE to add a sparkling detail without distracting from the dress.
