Orange Culture Unveils Its SS22 Collection at Lagos Fashion Week
At an off-site location in Victoria Island, Lagos, contemporary Nigerian brand Orange Culture presented its spring/summer 2022 collection in front of a lively gathered audience once more.
Titled “Peacock Riot”, the Orange Culture’s SS22 collection is born from the social unrest, protests and public awakenings that have taken place in recent times, in particular the #EndSARS demonstrations that rocked the Nigerian city of Lagos more than a year ago. The result is a series of designs that provoke activism through fashion, and explore themes of isolation, inclusion and dignity as a human right, following in the irreverent brand’s history of employing clothing to both ask questions and answer them.
With “Peacock Riot”, designer Adebayo Oke-Lawal uses a kaleidoscope of colors, prints and patterns in a nod to the titular bird, creating a lively show of looks curated by award-winning stylist Daniel Obasi. Models were sent down the grass-green runway – which represents a hypothetical “OC Garden” – in tonal separates, printed leggings, crop tops and cut-out tank tops and T-shirts.
The OC Garden is an imaginary constructed space that is free form prejudice and discrimination, a safe space for society’s most vulnerable; it’s a representation of the mental space people occupy before they set off to confront the issues that threaten their way of life.
